Delhi’s RML Hospital Expansion to boost bed capacity, MBBS seats

New Delhi: The Minister of State for Health, Pratap Rao Jadhav recently, informed the Lok Sabha about a series of expansion plans for Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, a major central government healthcare facility.

As part of the expansion, a Super Specialty Block (SSB) is currently under construction at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. This new addition is expected to greatly enhance the hospital’s capacity, enabling it to offer a broader range of specialized medical services.

Once the project is completed, the hospital’s bed capacity will increase from 1,532 to 2,198, greatly improving its ability to provide advanced healthcare.

The minister was responding to the questions posed by Shri Ramvir Singh Bidhuri regarding the proposed scheme of the Government for the expansion of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital; 

He asked about the total number of beds likely to be added to the said hospital along with the estimated cost to be incurred upon the same;

He seeks to know whether there is any proposal for the expansion of other hospitals as well in Delhi; and if so, the details thereof?

In response to these questions MoS Health informed that the augmentation of Healthcare Facilities to cater to the increasing needs and functional requirements in Central Government Hospitals is a continuous administrative process. Central Government Hospitals as per their functional requirement submit various proposals for expansion to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) from time to time. After duly examining the proposals in consultation with the Department of Expenditure (DoE) and other stakeholders, approval of competent authority is obtained.

Under proposals finally approved, a Super Specialty Block (SSB) is under construction in Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. After completion of SSB, the bed strength of Dr. RML Hospital will increase to 2198 from the existing 1532 beds. Further, the construction of a Medical College building of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital has also been approved, which will increase the number of undergraduate MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats from 100 to 250, added the Minister.
