Renowned Neurosurgeon Dr Sandip Chatterjee passes away at 63
Kolkata: Distinguished Neurosurgeon Dr Sandip Chatterjee, also a well-known debater and founder of two debating societies unfortunately passed away at the age of 63 due to heart failure, which occurred as a result of his myeloma, a type of cancer, affecting his heart muscles in the later stages of the disease.
Dr Chatterjee was a professor of neurosurgery and head of the department of neurosurgery at the Vivekananda Institute of Medical Science in Kolkata. He was also the consultant neurosurgeon and academic coordinator of Park Clinic which was founded by his father. Sadly, he breathed his last at his residence this morning. He is survived by his wife and children.
With more than 30 Years of professional experience in the field of Neurosurgery, Dr Sandip is considered one of the best in India for brain tumour surgery and performed countless surgeries. He specialised in pediatric neurosurgery, especially spinal dysraphism. He was also a good wildlife photographer apart from being an exceptional speaker and debater.
Dr Chatterjee started his medical career with an M.B.B.S. from Calcutta University, in 1984. This was followed by his F.R.C.S. from Edinburgh, the UK in 1989. He then went on to do his DNB in Surgery, in 1989, which was followed by F.R.C.S. (Neurosurgery), he, then passed the FR’s Examination of Joint Intercollegiate Board in Neurosurgery in 1994, and later by Diplomate National Board in Neurosurgery.
He was the Hony Secretary, of the Indian Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery, the Hony President, of the India Society of Neuro-Oncology, and AO SPINE, Education Officer in Neurosurgery. He holds a Permanent Registration of the General Medical Council, U.K., as well as a Permanent Registration of the Indian Medical Council. He was a Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (Neurosurgery), MNAMS, in 1996.
Recipient of many awards including the Mother Teresa International Award in 2015, Girish Ch. Ghosh Prize in Pathology in 1983, Silver Casket in Pathology in 1984, University Gold Medal in Surgery in 1984, Content Silver Medal in Ophthalmic Surgery in 1984 and Wilson Silver Medal in Operative Surgery in 1985.
As per a TOI news report, Dr Sandip Chatterjee is the son of the esteemed pediatric surgeon, Dr Subir Chatterjee. His elder brother, Dr Sudip Chatterjee, is a renowned endocrinologist.
