How many doctors registered with state medical councils? Check out Health Ministry data

New Delhi: As per the National Medical Commission’s data, as of November 2024, India has altogether 13,86,145 allopathic doctors, who are registered with the State Medical Councils across the country.

Among these, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has the maximum number i.e. 209540 registered doctors, followed by Tamil Nadu Medical Council, which has 149399 registered doctors, and Karnataka Medical Council, which has 141155 doctors registered with it.

The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda shared this data with the Lok Sabha while responding to some queries in this regard. Parliament members Shri Murari Lal Meena and Shri Ramshankar Rajbhar sought to know from the Ministry about the details of MBBS doctor-population ratio in the country. Further, the Ministry was asked to inform about the steps taken by the Government to improve the MBBS doctor-population ratio in the country, the status of availability of doctors in Government hospitals in the country.

Apart from these, other queries included whether there was any shortage of doctors in India and data was also sought regarding the total number of doctors graduating annual in the country along with the amount of annual fee. Shri Rajbhar also asked the Health Minister if the Government had any plans to reduce the fees payable by the medical students.

Responding to these queries, the Union Health Minister informed that “As per information provided by National Medical Commission (NMC), there are 13,86,145 allopathic doctors registered with the State Medical Councils (SMCs) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) as on November, 2024. Assuming 80% availability of registered allopathic doctors and around 6.14 lakh AYUSH doctors, the doctor-population ratio in the country is around 1:811 which is better than the WHO standard of 1:1000.”

The Union Health Minister further informed that the Government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats. “There is an increase of 102% in Medical Colleges from 387 before 2014 to 780 as of now. Further, there is an increase of 130% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,18,137 as of now and increase of 135% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 73,157 as of now,” informed the Union Health Minister.

Further, the Ministry informed that the following steps have been taken by the Government to increase the doctor/medical professional in the country:

i. Centrally Sponsored Scheme for establishment of new medical college by upgrading district/ referral hospital under which 131 new medical colleges are already functional out of 157 approved medical colleges which includes 27 medical colleges in the State of Uttar Pradesh.

ii. Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges to increase MBBS and PG seats.

iii. Under “Upgradation of Government Medical Colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks” of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme, a total of 75 projects have been approved, of which 69 projects are complete.

iv. Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these.

v. DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.

vi. Enhancement of age limit for appointment/ extension/ re-employment against posts of teachers/Dean/Principal/ Director in medical colleges upto 70 years.

Regarding the issue of fees, the Health Minister informed, “As envisaged in Section 10(1) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, NMC has framed guidelines for determination of fees and all other charges in respect of fifty percent of seats in private medical institutions and deemed to be universities which are governed under the provisions of NMC Act, 2019.”

EWS Students secure Management, NRI quota PG Medical Seats with Crores of course fee, candidates demand inquiry

New Delhi: Despite belonging to the economically weaker section, more than 140 such candidates have been admitted to postgraduate medical courses in clinical specialties from the management and NRI quotas of private medical colleges for which they will have to pay a tuition fee ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 90 lakh per annum, TOI has reported.

Therefore, these EWS candidates, belonging to families with an annual income of less than Rs 8 lakh, will have to pay more than a crore for a three-year postgraduate course. 

Many aspirants are now questioning this revelation, as they doubt the eligibility of these candidates to secure an EWS certificate when they could afford to pay such a hefty amount as their PG medical course fee.

More than 24,600 PG medical seats were allotted in the first round announced on November 20. Among these 135 management quota seats in the private medical colleges and 8 NRI seats were allotted to candidates registered as EWS.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, an EWS candidate has been allotted an MS Orthopaedics seat in the management quota of Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences in Puducherry. The tuition fee for the entire course is up to Rs 1.6 crore. Another EWS candidate secured admission to an MD Radiology seat under the NRI quota in Rajrajeswari Medical College and Hospital, Mysore and will have to pay an annual fee of Rs 91 lakh. Therefore, the candidate will have to pay Rs 2.7 crore as the entire course fee.

Meanwhile, allegations are being by several MBBS graduates, who appeared in the NEET-PG 2024 exam, claiming that there was a huge increase in the candidates using fake EWS certificates. They are not demanding a Government inquiry into the matter.

Commenting on the matter, a NEET-PG aspirant told TOI, “It’s frustrating to see EWS candidates have taken admission in colleges that charge fees in crores. Govt must cancel their seats.”

MP doctors left scissors inside patient’s abdomen during surgery, Discovered 2 years later

Bhopal: A shocking case of alleged medical negligence has come to light in Bhind district, where a 44-year-old woman endured two years of severe abdominal pain only to find out that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her stomach in 2022.

Despite undergoing numerous tests, the woman found no relief or explanation for the excruciating abdominal pain she had been experiencing since her surgery in 2022 at Kamala Raja Hospital in Gwalior. However, a recent CT scan at Bhind District Hospital revealed a shocking incident. A metal object was found lodged in the left paracolic gutter, a part of the digestive tract which turned out to be a pair of surgical scissors. 

The woman, a resident of Saundha Gohad underwent surgery on February 20, 2022, at Kamala Raja Hospital in Gwalior to remove a cancerous lump. What was meant to be a life-saving procedure turned into a prolonged nightmare as she began experiencing debilitating pain, bloating, and digestive issues for the past two years.

Although she reached out to doctors and underwent several tests, her condition remained undiagnosed. When the pain became unbearable, she approached the Bhind District Hospital on Friday where doctors referred her to undergo a CT scan leading to the shocking discovery, as reported by TOI news report. Allegedly, it appears that the surgical team at the hospital left behind a pair of scissors inside her abdomen. 

His family members told The Daily, “She was experiencing excruciating abdominal pain for the last two years, which worsened over time. Despite undergoing several medical tests, treatments, and consultations with various doctors, the root cause of her discomfort remained undiagnosed.”

After discovering the cause of her pain, her family members felt outraged. They have accused the doctors at Kamala Raja Hospital of gross negligence and are planning to take legal action against the erring doctors and the hospital staff.

NMC issues notices to 198 medical colleges for not submitting stipend details

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued show-cause notices to altogether 115 government and 83 private medical colleges for non-compliance with the Commission’s directions to upload the details of the stipend paid to the interns and resident doctors.

Through a recent notice, the Apex Medical Commission has specified that the failure of these colleges to submit the information regarding stipends is “considered seriously”. Accordingly, the concerned 198 medical colleges including Maulana Azad Medical college MAMC, New Delhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr. RML Hospital, New Delhi, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, Rohini, ESIC run medical colleges, Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences RIMS, GMERS medical colleges, Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College & Hospital, DY Patil medical college, MGM Vashi and many more, have been asked to explain why penal action should not be taken against them for this non-compliance.

Drug Alert: CDSCO flags 56 formulations as Not of Standard Quality

New Delhi: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has declared 56 drug samples as “Not of Standard Quality” (NSQ) in its latest alert for October 2024. Among these, Trypsin & Chymotrypsin Tablets (Lysoflam Forte), Chlorhexidine Gluconate Solution 4% w/v, Diclofenac Sodium, Paracetamol & Chlorzoxazone Tablets, Hydroquinone, Tretinoin & Allantoin Cream (Lumadip), Liposomal Amphotericin B Injection 50mg (Ambilip) are some of the most widely used drugs listed.

As part of its ongoing regulatory oversight, the CDSCO collects drug samples from various sales and distribution points across the country. These samples are then analyzed to identify any batches that fail to meet the required quality standards.

The list of Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) drugs is published monthly on the CDSCO portal. The goal of this initiative is to inform stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, distributors, and consumers, about the presence of substandard or counterfeit drugs in the market, thereby enhancing public safety and promoting greater transparency.

Lately, the drugs samples collected in the month of October failed to meet the prescribed regulatory standards and were found in various tests to have deficiencies like dissolution, assay, disintegration, bacterial endotoxins, and particulate matter.

The tests on the collected drug samples were conducted at different CDSCO drug laboratories including Central Drugs Laboratory, Kolkata; RDTL, Guwahati; CDTL-Mumba; CDTL, Hyderabad; CDTL, Chennai and RDTL, Chandigarh.

Renowned orthodontist Dr Satheesh Kumar Reddy appointed as President of Dental Council of India

New Delhi: Renowned orthodontist, Director and Consultant at FMS Dental Hospital, Dr Satheesh Kumar Reddy has been appointed as the President of the Dental Council of India (DCI), effective November 29. 

Previously serving as the Vice President of DCI, Dr Reddy has been promoted to Acting President following the completion of Dr Dibyendu Mazumder’s tenure on November 28.

An official circular issued in this regard mentioned, “Consequent upon completion of tenure of Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar, President DCI on 28th November 2024, Dr. Satheesh Kumar Reddy, Vice President DCI has now taken over the charge of the Acting President of Dental Council of India with effect from 29th November 2024.”

Dr K. Satheesh Kumar Reddy is a very versatile orthodontist. He is the Director & Consultant Orthodontist at FMS Dental Hospital for the past 20 years. His areas of interest are invisible orthodontics (clear aligners), lingual orthodontics, self-ligating systems, surgical orthodontics and micro-implants.  

Dr Reddy brings with him 3 decades of excellence in both the clinical and the academic aspects of Orthodontics. He handles even the most complicated cases with utmost ease. His professional experience also includes writing articles on clinical techniques and practice management for orthodontic and dental publications.  

He is an Ex-Member of the Academic Senate of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh. He previously worked as a Professor and Director Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Sri Sai College of Dental Surgery, Hyderabad. Worked as a member of the Dental Council of India for 10 years (2004 to 2014).

He has done his BDS and MDS from Governmental Dental College, Hyderabad. He has also been a member of the High Power Committee in the Department of Health, Government of Andhra Pradesh for evaluation and recommendation of applications for the issue of EC for establishing Medical/Dental/Nursing/BHAMS colleges in the private sector, to the Government of Andhra Pradesh for 4 consecutive terms from 2004 to 2008.

He has been the President of A P Orthodontic Study Group for more than 10 years. He was the Organizing Chairman of the 50th India Orthodontic Conference held in Hyderabad in 2015 and has been instrumental in conducting various dental checkup camps with active participation. Other than academic pursuits, Dr K Satheesh Kumar Reddy is also a sports enthusiast participating and winning in Chess, Shuttle Badminton, and golf at college and club-level tournaments.

6 doctors booked after 5-year-old’s death during surgery

Based on an official medical board report that revealed that a five-year-old boy did not die from complications related to a genital disorder, six doctors including, an anaesthetist and paediatric surgeon, have been charged and are now wanted in a case of medical negligence.

The father of the deceased son who is a city-based advocate blamed the doctors for his son’s death. He claimed that his son was taken for an operation for phimosis with penile torsion, a genital-related disorder, however, instead his son died from multi-organ failure due to septicaemia following a hypoxic brain.

Gujarat Medical Council suspends cardiologist for unnecessary angioplasties leading to patient deaths

The Cardiologist from Khyati Hospital, who was recently arrested for performing unnecessary angioplasty procedures on two PMJAY beneficiaries, has now been suspended for three years by the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC).

In its suspension order, the GMC mentioned that it had taken suo motu cognizance of the incident in addition to a request from the Medical Services division of the Gujarat Health Department, Indian Express has reported.

Retired MKCG doctor duped of ₹1 crore by fraudsters after 20 days of Digital Arrest

In a recent cyber fraud case, a retired doctor from MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur allegedly became the latest victim of an elaborate digital scam and lost around Rs 1 crore to fraudsters posing as a TRAI official and a Mumbai Cyber Crime Division officer. The retired doctor was kept under digital arrest for 20 days and was threatened with arrest.

The incident came to light after the Odisha Crime Branch Police arrested the fraudster and accordingly seized his mobile phone, three SIM cards, a Saudi Arabian SIM card, a passbook, a passport, an Aadhaar card, a PAN card, a debit card, and credit cards.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Gets CDSCO Panel Nod To Manufacture, Market Esomeprazole Magnesium

New Delhi: Reviewing the bioequivalence study report of the gastric drug Esomeprazole Magnesium for delayed release oral suspension 10 mg, the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) functional under the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has granted approval to drug major Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories to manufacture and market Esomeprazole Magnesium for delayed release oral suspension 10 mg.

This nod came after Dr. Reddy’s laboratories presented the bioequivalence study report before the committee.

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat GERD, reduce the risk of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers, eradicate H. pylori, and to treat conditions causing gastric acid hypersecretion.

Esomeprazole is indicated for the treatment of acid-reflux disorders, including healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis, symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, H. pylori eradication, prevention of gastrointestinal bleeds with NSAID use, and for the long-term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

Esomeprazole exerts its stomach acid-suppressing effects by preventing the final step in gastric acid production by covalently binding to sulfhydryl groups of cysteines found on the (H+, K+)-ATPase enzyme at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. This effect leads to inhibition of both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion, irrespective of the stimulus. As the binding of esomeprazole to the (H+, K+)-ATPase enzyme is irreversible and new enzyme needs to be expressed in order to resume acid secretion, esomeprazole’s duration of antisecretory effect that persists longer than 24 hours.

At the recent SEC meeting for gastroenterology and hematology held on November 14, 2024, the expert panel reviewed the bioequivalence study report of the gastric drug Esomeprazole Magnesium for delayed release oral suspension.

After detailed deliberation, the committee recommended the grant of permission for the manufacturing and market of Esomeprazole Magnesium for Delayed Release Oral Suspension 10 mg for the applied indication.
