Patna: In a significant move towards improving the healthcare facilities in Bihar, the Union Health Ministry approved the construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bihar. This approval is followed by the Bihar government’s proposal three years back to establish the second AIIMS in the state.
The state government has officially transferred 150.13 acres of land to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) for the construction of AIIMS at Ekmi Shobhan Bypass in Darbhanga district. This decision marks a crucial step towards addressing the healthcare needs of the region and providing high-quality medical services to its people.
Additional chief secretary of Bihar Prataya Amrit said, “The remaining 37.31 acres for the project will be transferred next week,”

The AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Darbhanga will be the second AIIMS in the state of Bihar, the first one is in Patna. These institutions are part of a broader initiative to improve healthcare infrastructure and medical education across India. The AIIMS in Darbhanga is expected to enhance healthcare access and provide high-quality medical education and research opportunities in the region.
Dr Madhabananda Kar, executive director of AIIMS Darbhanga has mentioned that ideally, they wanted more than 200 acres of land for their project which would help in creating a fully functional medical institute with ample space for hospitals, research centres, residential areas, and other essential infrastructure in one go.
According to the Hindustan Times, Bihar’s Health Minister Mangal Pandey said, “Construction of AIIMS at Darbhanga will begin soon.” He also added, “A month back I had met Union health minister JP Nadda to expedite the AIIMS Darbhanga project. Subsequently, we got a letter from the Centre requesting us to hand over the land so that work can be initiated soon.”
The development of this AIIMS will be a cornerstone in the state’s efforts to improve medical facilities and reduce the healthcare disparity faced by its residents, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.

Gurgaon: In response to the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate medico at R G Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, the Haryana government has issued a comprehensive advisory which mandates several measures to be implemented within two days at state-run medical colleges.
The advisory mandates the creation of a 24/7 operational police post at each medical college, with a female police officer present on duty at all times.
The advisory was issued on Thursday by Haryana’s additional chief secretary (medical education and research) Sumita Misra. The notice stipulates that medical colleges are required to maintain close coordination with their nearest police station, SHO, and DSP. They are also required to submit an action taken report to the government within 48 hours.

The advisory also mandates the installation of CCTV cameras in strategic locations, including hostels, main gates, roads, roundabouts, and each floor of hospital and college blocks. It also requires the establishment of a dedicated control room for continuous monitoring of CCTV footage, with a minimum backup storage of three months. Additionally, the deployment of security guards in all outpatient departments (OPDs) and outside wards is also required, as stated in the advisory. This move is expected to enhance emergency response times and provide students and staff with immediate assistance if needed.
The advisory has recommended conducting periodic safety audits, providing secure streets, parking, and transportation, and implementing robust access controls to ensure a safe environment. These controls should include ID badges, keycards, or biometric authentication for all staff members.
According to The Times of India, Virender Yadav, chief medical officer said, “Four nursing colleges in the city – SGT, Amity, RR and Gurugram University – along with SGT medical college have been directed to follow the guidelines.”

Cambridge: AstraZeneca’s Imfinzi (durvalumab) and Lynparza (olaparib) have been approved in the European Union (EU) as treatment for certain patients with primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Imfinzi plus chemotherapy as 1st-line treatment followed by Lynparza and Imfinzi has been approved for patients with mismatch repair proficient (pMMR) disease. Imfinzi plus chemotherapy followed by Imfinzi alone has been approved for patients with mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) disease.
The approval by the European Commission follows the positive opinion of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use and is based on a prespecified exploratory subgroup analysis by mismatch repair (MMR) status from the DUO-E Phase III trial, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
In the trial, the Lynparza and Imfinzi regimen reduced the risk of disease progression or death for patients with pMMR disease by 43% (median 15.0 months versus 9.7 months, hazard ratio [HR] 0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.44-0.73) versus the control arm. The Imfinzi regimen reduced the risk of disease progression or death among patients with dMMR disease by 58% (median not reached versus 7.0 months, HR 0.42; 95% CI 0.22-0.80) versus the control arm.
Els Van Nieuwenhuysen, Gynaecological Oncologist at the UZ Leuven, Belgium and DUO-E trial investigator, said, “This approval is welcome news for patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer in Europe, especially those with mismatch repair proficient disease who have limited options. The olaparib and durvalumab as well as the durvalumab regimens now have the potential to improve outcomes for all patients in this setting in Europe, regardless of mismatch repair status.”
Dave Fredrickson, Executive Vice President, Oncology Business Unit, AstraZeneca, said, “This approval of Imfinzi and Lynparza regimens marks the first-ever approval for a combination of an immunotherapy and PARP inhibitor in endometrial cancer and a major step forward for patients. In Europe, endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, and until now, the 70 to 80 per cent of patients who have mismatch repair proficient disease have had few available treatment options.”
The safety profiles of both regimens were generally manageable, well-tolerated and broadly consistent with the known profiles of the individual agents.
Regulatory submissions for Imfinzi and Lynparza are currently under review in Japan and several other countries based on the DUO-E trial. Imfinzi plus chemotherapy was recently approved for dMMR patients with primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer in the US.

New Delhi: This year, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given renewal permission to the medical colleges for altogether 106434 MBBS seats.
Through a notice dated 16.08.2024, NMC took cognisance of the fact that some of the medical colleges did not deposit the penalty amount as mentioned in the letter issued by NMC towards renewal permission for 2024-2025.
