AP pharma factory fire: NHRC directs authorities to conduct probe

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of an explosion that took place at the a private industrial unit in Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district. The explosion claimed the life of at least 17 workers and injured several others.

Authorities have been directed to conduct a thorough investigation. The incident could have been worse, but fewer workers were present as it happened during lunchtime. The death toll may rise as search operations continue.

According to PTI, NHRC in a statement on Friday expressed deep concern over the apparent violation of safety norms that led to the incident.

The commission has issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh chief secretary and the director general of police, directing them to conduct a thorough investigation in the matter.
The probe is expected to examine if the industrial unit adhered to all safety regulations and legal requirements and whether there was any negligence on the part of the authorities responsible for supervising the facility.
The NHRC has mandated that a detailed report be submitted within two weeks. The report should include the status of the FIR filed in connection with the incident, the treatment being provided to the injured and the disbursement of compensation to the kin of those killed or injured.
The commission has also sought information on any relief and rehabilitation efforts undertaken for the victims and the action taken against officials found responsible.
The explosion sparked widespread concern, with State Disaster Response Force teams continuing its search for survivors. The cause of the explosion remains unclear and the authorities fear that more bodies may be trapped under the rubble.

RG Kar Medico Death Case: Broken door bolt of seminar hall under CBI scanner

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), investigating the brutal rape and murder of a female postgraduate medico at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is focusing on how the crime was carried out undisturbed in the seminar hall, where investigators found a broken tower bolt on the door.

According to the PTI report, CBI officials are also trying to find out if someone was stationed outside the seminar hall to ensure that the crime went undisturbed, he said, adding that the investigators are analysing CCTV footage to confirm it.

The investigating officers wondered why nobody could hear any sound from inside the seminar hall when the victim was being tortured.

“The tower bolt was broken, which caused the door to malfunction. We are probing whether anyone was stationed outside to act as a guard while the crime was committed,” a CBI officer told PTI.

Initial findings indicate that the door, due to the broken tower bolt, had been malfunctioning for some time. The victim entered the hall between 2 AM and 3 AM on August 9. A doctor on duty reported seeing her asleep inside the hall, the officer said.

“Interviews with doctors, interns, and junior doctors revealed that the door’s malfunction had been a known issue, which prevented the victim from locking the door that night,” he added.

On Friday, the CBI continued its interrogation of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the case. The agency also presented the arrested suspect, Sanjay Roy, in court, where he was remanded to 14 days of jail custody.

The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered inside the seminar hall on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested the following day in connection with the crime.

The CBI took over the probe from Kolkata Police following a Calcutta High Court order on August 13.

CISF takes over security at RG Kar Medical College after SC Order

Kolkata: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took over the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday following the directive of the Supreme Court. CISF personnel were deployed to beef up the security at the hospital and college complex in all shifts.

This decision follows a suo motu case concerning the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the facility on August 9.

The step was taken after the Supreme Court, on Tuesday, asked to hand over the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the CISF as it heard the suo motu case of the rape and murder of the trainee doctor there, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier on August 21, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) wrote a letter to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal on the deployment of CISF personnel at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in response to the rising protests following the rape and murder incident of a postgraduate trainee doctor of the institution.

According to an ANI report, speaking on the deployment and the number of CISF personnel deployed, the Deputy Inspector General of CISF, K Pratap Singh, said on Thursday, “You can see we have already deployed. You will find us deployed on all the shifts. That detail (the number of CISFs deployed) is not appropriate on my part to say. Let us do our job. It will all happen; just wait and watch.”

This move comes as West Bengal faces a period of heightened agitation, with protesters voicing various grievances. The CISF’s intervention is expected to bolster security efforts and help mitigate any potential threats to public peace.
