New Delhi: Orchid Pharma Limited, based in Chennai, India, the
only Indian pharmaceutical company to have ever invented a New Chemical Entity (NCE), has announced the launch of its new drug – Cefepime-Enmetazobactam, which has been approved
for the treatment of complicated Urinary Tract infections (cUTI), Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia
(HAP) and Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) indications.
In a landmark collaboration,
Orchid Pharma has partnered with Cipla Limited to ensure widespread and rapid
distribution of this breakthrough antibiotic combination across India.
“The launch of Cefepime-Enmetazobactam marks a significant milestone for India’s
pharmaceutical industry in the fight against AMR, a growing global health issue, reinforcing India’s
leadership in medical innovation. Orchid Pharma and Cipla are confident that this collaboration
will set a new benchmark for addressing critical healthcare challenges through strategic
partnerships and advanced research,” the release stated.
The partnership between Orchid Pharma and Cipla combines Orchid’s innovative drug
development capabilities with Cipla’s extensive distribution network and market presence.
Speaking on the launch, Manish Dhanuka, Managing Director Orchid Pharma said, “With
increasing resistance to the current drugs most commonly used for treatment of these indications
– e.g. Piperacillin-Tazobactam for cUTI – doctors were forced to start using Carbapenems – a
reserve drug meant to be used when most other drugs don’t work. Now, Orchid’s CefepimeEnmetazobactam will allow doctors to spare Carbapenems, prolonging their effective life by
restricting their use.”
Umang Vohra, Managing Director & Global Chief Executive Officer, Cipla, said, “AMR is an
urgent and serious healthcare challenge that needs global attention. With the rising incidence of
potentially-life threatening infections, there is a strong need for novel anti-infectives in the
effective treatment of MDR infections. This partnership enhances Cipla’s commitment to AMR
stewardship and strengthens our efforts to combat infectious diseases and deliver advanced,
innovative therapies to patients.”
Both companies are committed to responsible antibiotic stewardship and will work closely with
healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate use of this new antibiotic combination.
Educational initiatives and guidelines for prescribing will be developed to maximize the drug’s benefits while minimizing the risk of further antimicrobial resistance.

New Delhi: Amid the raging row over the paper leak controversy around the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) due to ”lack of integrity,” Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has assured that strictest action will be taken against the guilty and CBI is going to catch everyone involved. He further said that the discussion must happen within tradition and decorum.
“The government is ready for every kind of discussion, but everything should happen within tradition and decorum. When the President herself spoke about the exam in her speech yesterday, it showed the government’s intention that we are ready to face any issue… The government’s responsibility is towards the youth of the country, towards the students of the country… The government is ready to put forth its side, then what is the confusion? … We are going to take the strictest action and the CBI is going to catch everyone, we will not spare anyone. A credible high-level committee has also been formed for reform, soon the date of all those exams will also be announced. I also request the opposition to come out of politics and join the discussion,” said Dharmendra Pradhan, quotes ANI.
“We are not going to spare anyone. Those who were in charge of NTA have been removed and the responsibility has been given to senior officials. All this is proof of the government’s commitment… I want to appeal to the opposition that they should not confuse the students…” he added.
The opposition however is adamant on its demand to enforce a discussion on the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
Rajya Sabha LoP and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Under Rule 267 we are demanding a special discussion on it in the House, and after that, we will state our demands.”
Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda said, “The future of the youth has been spoiled due to the continuous paper leaks in the country. The maximum number of paper leak cases have been seen in Haryana. The paper was leaked in the NEET exam and the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is running away from responsibility. We had brought up a discussion on this and when it was raised in the House, the mike was switched off. If the mike of the Leader of the Opposition is switched off, then there will be anger among other opposition MPs and the same happened in the House. We demand that this issue be discussed.”
Notably, for the NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on June 23 registered a criminal case over the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the examination by the NTA and formed special teams to probe the matter.
As per the agency’s FIR, certain “isolated incidents” occurred in a few states during the conduct of the NEET (UG) 2024 examination, which was held on May 5, 2024.
This year’s NEET UG 2024 exam was mired in controversies after a paper leak scam came to the light. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that around 13 people, including four examinees and their family members, were arrested in Bihar for their alleged involvement in the paper leak of the NEET-UG exam. Patna police sources had previously claimed that the NEET-UG question papers along with their answers were provided to around 20 aspirants a day before the date of the exam i.e. May 5, 2024.
Then, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police, which took over the investigation, revealed that the brokers involved in the NEET paper leak scam took between Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh from each of the medical aspirants in exchange for giving them the question paper of the NEET UG 2024 question paper ahead of the examination.
Multiple pleas have been filed before the High Courts and the Supreme Court seeking an investigation into the alleged paper leak scam. Some of the pleas demanded the scrapping of the NEET UG 2024 exam and holding a retest. Meanwhile, during the case proceedings, NTA earlier decided to withdraw the grace marks awarded to 1563 candidates and hold an optional retest for those candidates. Those who did not opt for the retest were allowed to retain their original marks, without the grace marks.
The matter is now being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Central Government on June 22, 2024, handed over the charge of investigation in the alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 examination to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“Certain cases of alleged irregularities / cheating / impersonation / malpractices have been reported. For transparency on the conduct of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India after a review has decided to entrust the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for comprehensive investigation,” the Ministry of Education stated in a release.

Rourkela: A quack working as a medical officer at Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) in Odisha, hired through an outsourcing agency has been arrested for forgery and impersonation. This marks the third instance of his apprehension on similar charges.
The accused was identified as a 53-year-old resident of West Singhbhum, Jharkhand and he used to work at a chemist shop. He has a history of
similar fraudulent activities and this is the second time that he has been
arrested for posing as a doctor in the past five years.
According to the Rourkela
police, he assumed the identity of Dr R***** C****** J** and used his
credentials to secure a position as a medical officer in the dialysis unit of
RGH on December 23 of the previous year, reports The New Indian Express. He got
the employment through Rahi Care Pvt Ltd, an outsourcing firm. His fraud was
exposed when Bajaj Finance, a financial services company from which he had
taken a personal loan of Rs 16 lakh, scrutinized his documents and uncovered
the fraud.
His scheme fell apart when he failed to forge
a document correctly, which contained the actual phone number of the doctor he
was impersonating. He had skillfully altered Dr Jha’s medical certificate,
Aadhaar card, and other documents, superimposing his photograph to create a
convincing fake identity, reports the Daily.
Superintendent of Police
Brijesh Kumar Rai confirmed that Bajaj Finance had lodged a complaint of
impersonation and fraud against the accused. The investigation revealed that
in 2010, he had been employed at Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital (HTMCH)
but fled when his true identity was discovered. He was previously arrested in
November 2019 by Town police in Sundargarh for deceitfully securing a position
at Hathbari Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Nuagaon block, about 45 km from
Rourkela.
According to The Daily, he
had worked there for nearly three years before his credentials were questioned.
The, then, Sundargarh Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Dr SK Mishra grew
suspicious and had his qualifications verified by the Veer Surendra Sai
Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla, leading to a
complaint and his subsequent arrest on November 13, 2019.
Dr Ganesh Prasad Dash,
the superintendent of RGH, stated that the hospital had no means to find out
his impersonation, as he had very discreetly completed the registration process
with the Odisha Council of Medical Registration recently. Mayur Agarwal, the
area manager of Rahi Care Pvt Ltd, remarked that he possessed significant
technical knowledge, which initially masked his deception. The agency was
informed of the fraud by the police on Wednesday and has since terminated his
employment. A police complaint will also be filed against him by the firm. He
was earning approximately Rs 50,000 per month through the agency.
Interestingly, the
accused grew up in Rourkela, completing his education up to Class XII in the
steel city, where his father worked at the Rourkela Steel Plant. He later moved
to Jamshedpur, where he worked at a chemist shop, which sparked his interest in
medicine and his subsequent fraudulent pursuit of a medical career.

Germany: In a groundbreaking study published in JAMA Neurology, researchers have shed light on the often-overlooked connection between Type 1 Myocardial Infarction (MI) and Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS). This research unveils the intricate relationship between these two critical cardiovascular events, highlighting the need for comprehensive assessment and management strategies in patients presenting with AIS.
The cross-sectional study found that a dynamic change in troponin values does not help detect myocardial infarction in acute ischemic stroke, emphasizing that dynamic changes do not reveal the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of myocardial injury.
“The study found that a dynamic change in troponin was not associated with MI in patients with ischemic stroke, however, baseline absolute troponin value independently associated with type 1 myocardial infarction,” the researchers reported. “The best cutoffs for predicting type 1 MI were 5 to 10 times the upper limit of normal.”
Type 1 MI, characterized by plaque rupture and subsequent thrombosis leading to coronary artery occlusion, has long been recognized as a significant contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. On the other hand, AIS, caused by the sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain, poses severe neurological consequences, including paralysis and cognitive impairment. While these conditions have traditionally been distinct entities, recent evidence suggests a notable overlap, especially concerning patients with AIS.
Increased values of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) are common in patients with AIS and are associated with poor prognosis. However, there is no clarity on therapeutic and diagnostic implications in patients with ischemic stroke. Christian H. Nolte, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Berlin, Germany, and colleagues aimed to identify factors indicative of MI in patients with acute ischemic stroke and hs-cTn elevation. The primary hypothesis was that a dynamic change of hs-cTn values (>50% change) in patients with AIS indicates MI.
For this purpose, the researchers conducted a prospective, observational study with a blinded end-point assessment conducted across 26 sites in Germany. Patients who had an acute ischemic stroke within 72 hours and either (1) highly increased hs-cTn values on admission (>52 ng/L) or (2) hs-cTn levels above the upper limit of normal and a greater than 20% chance at repeated measurements, were included.
Patients’ enrollment was between 2018 and 2020, and had one year of follow-up. Exposure included standardized electrocardiography, coronary angiography, and echocardiography.
The main measures were MI diagnosis adjudicated by an independent end-point committee based on echocardiography, electrocardiography, and coronary angiography findings.
The following were the key findings of the study:
The study found that a dynamic change in hs-cTn values did not identify MI in AIS patients, underscoring that dynamic changes do not determine the underlying pathophysiological mechanism.
“In exploratory analyses, very high absolute hs-cTn values were associated with a diagnosis of type 1 MI. There is a need for further studies on how to identify best patients with stroke who should undergo coronary angiography,” the researchers wrote.
