Delhi HC orders police action against oxytocin use in dairy colonies

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has ordered action against the use of oxytocin in dairy colonies in the national capital and directed authorities to take strict action against the use of oxytocin, labelling it as animal cruelty and a criminal offence.

Doctors in the national capital have lauded the recent ruling by the Delhi High Court to crack down on the use of oxytocin in dairy farming, denouncing it as an act of animal cruelty.

Responding to a petition concerning the conditions of dairy farms in Delhi, the High Court directed authorities on Friday to take stringent measures against the use of oxytocin, categorizing it as both animal cruelty and a criminal offence.

Dr Atul Gogia from Ganga Ram Hospital emphasised the health risks associated with consuming dairy products from areas where there is improper disposal of garbage.

He warned of potential contamination leading to various infections, including jaundice and typhoid.

“It’s important to ensure the hygiene of milk products before consumption as there are potential long-term effects of contamination, such as organ damage from heavy metals present in water,” Gogia told PTI videos.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Court has instructed the Delhi government’s Department of Drugs Control to carry out weekly inspections and register cases, which the police will subsequently investigate.

Additionally, the Intelligence Department of Delhi Police has been tasked with identifying the sources of oxytocin production, packaging, and distribution, with orders to take legal action as necessary.

According to a PTI report, “This was a very aware step taken by the High Court because dairies inject cows with a high dose of oxytocin to increase milk production, and then this oxytocin reaches humans through milk and milk products, which is harmful for the human body,” Dr Swati said.

Dr Sanjeev Bagai underscored the importance of the court’s decision, highlighting the considerable medical, social, and environmental risks associated with waste dumps.

He emphasized the potential health threats posed by toxic substances emitted from such sites, including methane and nitrogen compounds, which can lead to severe health ailments such as cancer, respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and pregnancy complications.

Walgreens, Boehringer Ingelheim partner to improve diversity in clinical trials

Deerfield: Walgreens and Boehringer Ingelheim have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at optimizing recruitment and making clinical trials more accessible, inclusive and equitable.

“This collaboration will offer people an opportunity to learn about and potentially participate in an important Phase III clinical trial within the familiar and accessible environment of Walgreens pharmacies, reflecting a shared vision to expand access to healthcare and research,” the release stated.

Through this collaboration, Boehringer Ingelheim will leverage select Walgreens community pharmacies as clinical trial sites for people living with obesity, overweight and type 2 diabetes. The effort aims to dismantle barriers, improve access, and address equitable health representation in clinical trials, especially among Black and Hispanic adults who are more likely to have obesity in the U.S. and have historically been underrepresented.

“Embracing our pharmacy clinical trial centers in this study underscores our joint commitment to community health and innovation,” said Ramita Tandon, Chief Clinical Trials Officer at Walgreens. “This model not only provides foundational education on clinical research for patients but also empowers individuals, offering them a new pathway to engage in their healthcare through clinical trial participation. It’s a step forward in transforming the landscape of clinical research, helping to make clinical trials more inclusive and accessible.”

Additionally, Boehringer is partnering with EmVenio Research to complement this initiative by introducing mobile research units to extend reach and provide additional options for participation.

“Boehringer is proud to embrace this community-centric approach to clinical research with Walgreens and EmVenio,” said Lennart Jungersten, Senior Vice President, Medicine & Regulatory Affairs at Boehringer Ingelheim U.S. “By bringing clinical trials into the heart of local communities, we’re making them more accessible, helping to provide access to diverse populations with pressing health needs to participate in our clinical trials. Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to helping those living with overweight and obesity to transform lives for generations to come.”

It is estimated that over 1 billion people in the world live with obesity, and numbers are continuing to rise, with an estimated 24% of the entire world population affected by 2035. Obesity is included among cardiovascular, renal and metabolic (C-R-M) diseases, and, collectively, these are the leading cause of death worldwide.

“At EmVenio, we believe that innovation is meaningful and access to clinical trial research should be universal. Our partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim exemplifies our commitment to breaking down barriers and expanding access to transformative healthcare solutions,” says Thad Wolfram, President, EmVenio Research. “By bringing clinical trials directly to local communities, we’re not just conducting research, we’re fostering inclusivity and diversity in clinical trials.”

Leveraging pharmacies and mobile research units for clinical trial research is a forward-thinking approach with the potential to enhance patient outcomes and set a new benchmark for inclusivity. Walgreens will also utilize advanced, real-world insights to identify and engage potential study participants as part of the collaboration.

Lupin unveils Rymti biosimilar Etanercept in Canada

Mumbai: Global pharma major Lupin Limited has announced the launch of Rymti, Lupin’s first biosimilar in Canada, through its partner Sandoz Canada.

Rymti is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe active rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, active and progressive psoriatic arthritis, severe axial spondyloarthritis, moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and chronic severe plaque psoriasis in children and adolescents. Rymti is approved for all therapeutic indications of the reference product Enbrel.

Lupin’s Etanercept was first approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis by PMDA in 2019, EMA in 2020, Health Canada in 2022, and since then has offered an effective treatment option for several chronic inflammatory diseases.

Rymti is available as a solution for injection in a pre-filled pen and pre-filled syringe. Data show a high patient acceptance of the easy-to-handle pre-filled pen. Patients favored this latex-free device for self-injection, which can lead to improvement in compliance.

Rymti, with an equivalent efficacy and safety to reference product Enbrel, is an attractive cost-effective treatment alternative that can contribute to sustainable healthcare and treatment options. The etanercept biosimilar Rymti, produced by Lupin, received approval from Canada’s drug regulator, Health Canada (HC), in August 2022, for all indications of the reference product Enbrel.

“We are delighted to announce the launch of Rymti, Lupin’s first biosimilar in Canada through our partner Sandoz,” said Vinita Gupta, Chief Executive Officer, Lupin. “With this important milestone, we continue to advance healthcare accessibility and affordability for patients in Canada.”

“Etanercept is used globally in the fight against a range of severe autoimmune disorders. We are happy to bring etanercept to the patients in Canada. We have diligently worked to build our portfolio to include etanercept ensuring patients have access to effective and affordable equivalent. This launch demonstrates our commitment to fostering healthcare solutions that truly make a difference,” said Dr. Cyrus Karkaria, President Biotechnology, Lupin.

Michel Robidoux, President and General Manager, Sandoz Canada said, “The launch of Rymti is a key milestone for Sandoz Canada. Thanks to our exclusive partnership with Lupin, we’re adding another etanercept option on the Canadian market, increasing access for patients.”

Etanercept is an injectable biologic medicine that inhibits the biological activity of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF). TNF is a key cytokine involved in the pro-inflammatory cascade in many chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis and plaque psoriasis. Etanercept as a soluble TNF receptor fusion protein specifically binds to TNF and blocks its activity, thereby reducing inflammation and disease symptoms.

The Company develops and commercializes a wide range of branded and generic formulations, biotechnology products, and APIs in over 100 markets in the U.S., India, South Africa, and across the Asia Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), Europe, and Middle East regions.

DMER Revokes 1-year Suspension of BJ Medical College Resident Doctors Involved in Alcohol Party Incident

Pune: Granting relief to the resident doctors, who were found involved in the alcohol party incident reported on December 31 last year, the Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER) recently revoked the decision to cancel ‘one academic term’ of these doctors. The action for cancellation of one academic year with expulsion from the hostel for six months was recommended by the college administration after the college authorities conducted an inquiry into the matter.

Although the DMER has revoked the action of one academic term cancellation, the action for expulsion from the hostel for six months with a fine of Rs 300 will continue to remain. Further, the resident doctors have been asked to submit an undertaking assuring that such incidents would not be repeated in the future.

An incident of harassment of female resident doctors was reported last year on December 31, 2023. Back then, some of the PG students at the male residents’ hostel consumed alcohol, went to the resident hostel for the females and created chaos. After the drunk doctors smashed a window of the female hostel resulting in panic, two female residents lodged a complaint to the college administration.

Reportedly, the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has also taken cognizance of the matter and slammed the college and hospital administration for the liquor party and the chaos that took place on the premises on the occasion of New Year’s Eve.

As per the latest media report by Hindustan Times, the incident took place on December 31 and as many as ten resident doctors, nine junior residents and one senior resident doctor, were accused of being involved in the incident who are pursuing MS Orthopaedics and MD courses. Conducting an inquiry into the matter, BJMC had recommended action for one academic year cancellation with expulsion from hostel for six months along with a fine of Rs 300.

Consequently, BJMC sent the proposal to DMER and it was approved by the medical education department on April 19. However, the resident doctors accepted their mistake and approached the DMER requesting to cancel the stern action.

Now the DMER has revoked the cancellation of ‘one academic term’ of these resident doctors involved in the incident. Commenting on the matter, Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar, DMER told HT, “We directed the BJMC dean to revoke the action of one academic term cancellation. However, the action for expulsion from the hostel for six months with a fine of ₹300 will continue to remain. To avoid such incidents in future the resident doctors have been asked to submit an undertaking on a ₹100 stamp paper that such incidents won’t be repeated in the future.”

Dr. Mhaisekar further pointed out that cancellation of one academic term would have long-term effects on the carrier of these doctors. Due to this, the decision was revoked on humanitarian grounds.
