The Telangana high court on Tuesday reserved its judgment in a petition by an NGO questioning the state’s move to shift its (NGO’s) mentally ill patients from the Sanga Reddy Government Hospital to Erragadda. The state has said that it wants to upgrade the Sanga Reddy hospital and requires the space being used by the NGO.The NGO, Integrated New Life Society for Education and Development (INSED), claimed that it was attending to the mentally ill orphans at the Sanga Reddy hospital and wanted a dedicated space to run an exclusive mental health facility. M Manohar of the NGO said they were treating 57 patients at the hospital and questioned the attempts to remove them from their care.Advocate General BS Prasad said the state would be shifting all of them to the state-run mental health facility at Erragadda. “The state government wants to upgrade the Sanga Reddy district hospital into a full-fledged government medical college and hospital,” the AG said.Petitioner’s counsel P Padma Rao, however, said that the mental health patients at Sanga Reddy would suffer if they were shifted to Erragadda as it was already struggling for space.Seeking directions to the NGO to vacate, the DME claimed the NGO had not registered itself with the state mental health authority and also did not possess basic facilities for a mental health centre. Justice A Abhishek Reddy reserved his orders after hearing both sides.
